March 2005
In looking over some of our past activities- since the Godown became operational about a year and a half ago- there have been significantly more events around contemporary dance and the visual arts than any of the other art forms.
Last month’s “Dance Traffic” was another feather in the cap of dance in the region which is growing from strength to strength. The results of the long collaboration between East African and Russian dancers and choreographers were seen in 3 exciting choreographies presented by Jokajok Dance Company from Kenya, Mionzi Dance Theatre, Tanzania and Footsteps from Uganda. A documentary video of the process and the work will be available soon.
A key event this month is from the visual arts. It is the launch of the ‘Thelathini’ a seminal book in the area of contemporary East African visual arts, featuring 30 contemporary artists. The book publication and launch is a project of Kuona Trust. Supporting the launch will be a small exhibition of some of the actual art works in the book.
For children: the Godown will host for the second time the children’s program “Tega Sikio”. (We aim for this event to be a regular weekend activity of the arts centre in time). Last month, about 50 (very well-behaved!) children, between the ages of 5 and 7 years, enjoyed a program of storytelling, puppetry and painting. See the Godown Calendar for the date of the next “Tega Sikio” and do send your little ones along for some artistic and cultural fun.
